Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland Council: Ecology Weekend at Camp Brandenburg

On behalf of Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland Council (formerly Girl Scouts of Black Hawk Council), I would like to thank you for your grant of $1000 to support our tree planting and forest ecology weekend at Camp Brandenburg in Dane, WI. The grant money helped us purchase 15 tree seedling planting bars and 850 oak, pine, and maple seedlings. It also helped us leverage an additional $2000 from the Alliant Energy Foundation for this project.

We held a forest ecology weekend May 1-3, 2009. More than 200 Girl Scouts attended the event. Girls in grades K-10 planted over 600 seedlings, participated in forest ecology activities and learned about reforestation processes along with other “greening of the environment” activities over the course of the weekend. Due to the success of the event, we held another ecology day on July 17, 2009 for an additional 50 girls who planted 250 more seedlings. Troops will be assisting with mulching and weeding the trees this spring and in the years to come.

Thank you again for assisting in a reforestation project that empowered 250 Girl Scouts to make a difference in their world, benefited the thousands of visitors to our Brandenburg property annually, and will contribute to a cleaner environment for all Dane County citizens for years to come.

All seeding, mulching materials, labor and equipment was provided by local residents, and by the town road patrolman. A native seed mix was used on the storm water berm, and adjacent areas to the storm water berm.

We appreciate the opportunity you have given us to work with the Dane County Environmental Council.
